Born at Oldham, Lancashire. Son of Mary Ellen Armitage, of 290, Hatherstall Road, Oldham. Husband of Hilda Armitage, of 2, Kirkham Street, Oldham. He was a cotton spinner prior to enlisting at Oldham on 11th December 1915 into the 14th Battalion Manchester Regiment. He was transferred to the 15th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France on 16th March 1917. He was killed in action, 25th August 1917, aged 22, during the German attack on the Knoll, near Lempire, France.
