Born and lived at Thurmaston, Leicestershire. Son of Joseph and Annie Appleby, of 261, Main Street, Thurmaston. He was an iron fitter prior to enlisting at Syston, Leicestershire on 11th December 1915. He was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 7th February 1916. Went to France on 26th February 1917 and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 24, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
