He was born at Pleasley Hill, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of Charles and Eliza Alvey. He lived at Sutton-in-Ashfield and was a coal miner. Husband of Ann Alvey of Gas Hill, Pleasley Hill, Mansfield. He enlisted in September 1914 at Mansfield and served in Gallipoli during 1915 with the 9th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action whilst serving with the 10th battalion, 8th August 1916, during the attack on Delville Wood, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
