Born in Arnold, Nottinghamshire. Husband of Eliza Allen, of 54 James Street, Arnold. He was an ironworker and enlisted in Nottingham on 19th May 1915 and was posted to the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. Went to France on 6th March 1916 and was posted to the 17th Battalion (Welbeck Rangers), Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 20th August 1916. He was killed in action on 24th August 1916, during the attack at Beaumont Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme.
