Born at Woodford, Northamptonshire. Son of Edward and Sarah Jane Allen, of King Street, Clay Cross, Chesterfield. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Clay Cross on 29th April 1914 into the 2/6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted to the 1/6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 16th August 1915 and went to France 18th August 1915. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
