Born Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. Son of James and Sarah Allen, of 69 Elmoor Green Road, Bloxwich, Staffordshire. husband of Rose Catherine Allen, of 33, Heywood St. Brimington, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner at Markham No.1 Colliery, Derbyshire prior to enlisting on 21st January 1915 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He went to France on 26th February 1917 and was killed in action, on 27th April 1917, aged 38, during the attack on Quarries and Cologne Farm near Hargicourt, France.
