He was born at Chesterfield. Son of William and Mary Allen, of 9, Beetwell Street, Chesterfield, Derbyshire; husband of Florence Allen, of 200, Sheffield Road, Stonegravels, Chesterfield. He was a cab driver prior to enlisting at Chesterfield on 10th December 1915. He went to France on 14th September 1916 and was killed in action, on 16th September 1917, during the attack near Zillebeke, Belgium
