D.C.M. London gazette 12.3.1919: For splendid gallantry and initiative near Montbrehain on 3rd October, 1918. After taking the surrender of 30 prisoners single-handed, he went on and personally captured a machine gun, killing all the team himself. When the enemy were evacuating the village, seeing some gun limbers limbering up to withdraw, he succeeded in wiping out both horses and men with his Lewis gun. Seeing the right flank being held up by machine gun fire he gave covering fire on his own initiative, thus enabling his comrades to advance. Throughout the whole operation he showed absolute disregard for danger and the greatest initiative: Killed in Action 5.11.1918, on the outskirts of Prisches whilst taking part in a major advance.
