Son of Thomas and Sarah Spray, of 4, Bestwood Road, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. He was a Shetland shawl maker before enlisting at Hucknall, on 27th January 1916. He went to France on 11th July 1916 with the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was posted to the 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 22nd July 1916. He was killed in action, on 29th April 1917, aged 29, during the attack near Marqueffles Farm, France.
