He enlisted at Nottingham on 8th December 1915, aged 21. Mobilised on 1st July 1916, he was posted to the 13th (Reserve) Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, four days later. He was then transferred to 12th Battalion Training Reserve on 1st September 1916; and 26th May 1917. Worsening health led to his discharge due to pleurisy contracted due to “sleeping between damp blankets” on 11th July 1917. He died on 30th August 1917.
