Born at Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of Mary J. Else, of Dalestorth Terrace, Skegby, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He lived at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. He was a miner at New Hucknall Colliery, Nottinghamshire. He enlisted at Mansfield aged 17 and went to France in March 1916. He was wounded in July 1916 and was sent back to England to recuperate at Wrest Park Military Hospital, Silsoe, Bedfordshire. He returned to France and was killed in action 20th September 1917, age 20.
