Went to France on 14th July 1915. He was awarded the D.C.M. London Gazette 30th March 1916: For gallant and good work with the machine gun section immediately North of the Canal South East of Ypres, on 15th February 1916. On one occasion during operations he guarded the flank, and, when his own gun was put out of action, he sent for another, and with another corporal held his post all night. He set a fine example to his men. Killed in Action 7th July 1916, at Quadrangle Trench near Fricourt, France during the Battle of the Somme.
