Born and lived at Old Whittington, Derbyshire. Husband of Minnie Loomes, of 32 Newbridge Street, Old Whittington. He was a Farm Labourer prior to enlisting on 3rd January 1912 at Chesterfield Derbyshire. He was posted 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 3rd April 1912 and went to France on 8th September 1914. He suffered shrapnel wounds to his head and shoulder on the 20th of October 1914 and was treated at No. 18 Field Ambulance and 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, France. He was transferred to England on 25th October 1914.

He returned to France on 9th February 1915 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left hand, being treated at 10th Stationary Hospital St. Omer, France, before being evacuated to England on Hospital Ship Asturius, on 13th May 1915.

He was appointed Lance Corporal on 20th June 1916, promoted Corporal on 28th July 1916 and Sergeant on 22nd August 1916.

He suffered Shrapnel Wounds to his left shoulder and right forearm on 1st July 1917 and was treated at 58 Casualty Station Lillers, France. He was then transferred to 56th General Hospital, Etaples, France on 2nd July 1917 and onto England on the 18th July 1917.

He returned to France on 3rd November 1917 and was killed in action, on 25th September 1918, during the attack on the Beux and Leduc Trenches, near Pontruet, France.
