London Gazette 5.12.1918: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty between 1st and 3rd September 1918, near Essars. This non-commissioned officer, in command of a platoon, passed through a Battalion to attack two posts from which our advance was being stoutly contested. He succeeded in working round the first, from which the enemy retired, he then rushed the second, killing six of the enemy and securing two prisoners and a machine gun. He then reorganised, and charged a third post, driving the enemy out, shooting four before they escaped. He showed great qualities of leadership and disregard of danger:” He was killed in action 3rd October 1918 during the attack and capture of Ramicourt and Montbrehain.
