Born at Sherborne, Dorset. Son of George Hyde, of Almshouses, Sherborne. He was a Coal Miner prior to enlisting on 22nd October 1914 at Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales into the Army Service Corps. He went to France on 14th July 1915 and was admitted to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulougne, France, suffering from Trench Fever, 4th September 1916. He was transferred to England on Hospital Ship St. David, 24th September 1916.

He returned to France on 20th May 1917 and was admitted to a General Hospital at Boulougne, suffering from Synovitis of his left knee and was evacuated to England, on 5th August 1917, on Hospital Ship St. Patrick.

He returned to France, on 8th December 1917 and was posted to the 13th Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers, on 13th December 1917. He suffered gunshot wounds to his head and left arm, on 6th January 1918 and was treated at 136th Field Ambulance. He was transferred to the 45th Casualty Clearing Station at Achiet-le-Grand, France and then to the 2nd Canadian General Hospital at Le Treport, France, on 9th January 1918.

He rejoined his battalion, on 18th February 1918 and then was transferred to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 6th April 1918. He was killed in action, on 21st April 1918, aged 38, during the counterattack at Mesnil, France.
