British War and Victory MedalHusband of Alice Howitt, of 41, Randolph Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham. He was a window cleaner prior to enlisting 27th April 1915 at Nottingham into the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was appointed Lance Corporal 2nd July 1915 and promoted Corporal 30th July 1915. He was posted to the 19th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 18th August 1915, and appointed Lance Sergeant 27th August 1915. He was promoted to Sergeant 13th October 1915, went to France 19th December 1916 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 9th January 1917. He was killed in action, 4th April 1917, age 36, by German Shellfire whilst serving in the line near Philosophe, France.
