Born at South Normanton, and lived at 33, South Street, South Normanton, Derbyshire. Son of John and Mary Ann Holmes. Husband of Annie Elizabeth Holmes, of 40, South Street, South Normanton. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 12th December 1914 at Nottingham into the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to Gallipoli on 18th September 1915. He went to France on 28th June 1916. He was posted to 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 10th July 1916. He was admitted to No. 6 Casualty Clearing Station, Rouitz, France, on 2nd December 1917 suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. He was transferred to 57 General Hospital, Boulogne, France, and onto England, on Hospital Ship St. Patrick, 7th December 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal, London Gazette Date 14th January 1918, and was discharged being no longer physically fit for war service, 18th March 1918. He died on 7th September 1918, aged 27.
