He was a wood machinist prior to enlisting 11th December 1915 in Ealing, Middlesex. He went to France 24th October 1916 with the Royal Flying Corps and was transferred to the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 24th September 1917. He suffered gunshot wounds to his cheek and lip in the German offensive on the Somme, France, and was admitted to No.24 General Hospital, Etaples, France. 24th March 1918.

On recovery, he was posted to the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 25th May 1918. He died, 17th October 1918, aged 41, from gunshot wounds to his back and gas gangrene sustained on the 14th October 1918, during the British attack on the Ypres salient near Wevelgem, Belgium, at No. 55 General Hospital Boulogne, France.
