Born at Giltbrook, Nottinghamshire and lived at Carlton, Nottingham. Son of Walter and Martha, of 2 York House, Carlton. He was a coal miner at Bentley Pit, Doncaster prior to enlisting 27th January 1913. He went to France 2nd March 1915, suffered gunshot wounds to his head, 18th April 1916 and died of the wounds, 20th April 1916, at No. 30 Casualty Clearing Station, Aubigny, France.
