Born in Sheffield, Yorkshire and lived at Old Whittington, Derbyshire. Son of Robert and Bertha Hewitt, of 60 Whittington Hill, Old Whittington. He was a shovel maker prior to enlisting at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He went to France on 16th February 1915 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Ovillers, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
