Born at Vauxhall, Warwickshire and lived at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Husband of Agnes Winfield (formerly Henson), of 142, Awsworth Road, Ilkeston. He was a Colliery Stoker prior to enlisting on 22nd March 1915 at Derby. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 28th June 1915 and promoted Corporal on 16th October 1915. He went to France on 10th November 1915 and was appointed Lance Sergeant on 18th April 1916. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme..
