He lived at South Normanton, Derbyshire. Son of John William and Eliza Haywood, of 23 Market Street, South Normanton. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 1st March 1915 at South Normanton. He qualified as a signaller and went to France, on 10th April 1916. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France on the first day of the Battle of the Somme,
