He was born in Beccles, Sussex and lived at 48 Lenton Boulevard, Nottingham. Son of William and Marianne Hayward. He was a cycle maker prior to enlisting at Nottingham in 1908. He went to France on 4th November 1914 and was killed in action on 31st December 1914 whilst serving in the trenches at La Gorge, near Richebourg, France.
