Born at Nottingham and lived at 4 Sun Hill, Nottingham. Son of William and Catherine Hartshorn, of 17, Bennetts Terrace, Beaumont Street, Nottingham. He was a labourer/porter prior to enlisting at Nottingham. He died of wounds 6th August 1917, age 22.
