Son of Montague and Ada Groves, of Salisbury, Rhodesia, South Africa. He enlisted into the 3/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 22nd November 1915 and joined the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment at Ypres 21st October 1916. He was wounded by Shellfire at Zillebeke, Belgium on the 18th October 1917 and died of wounds, 24th October 1917, aged 20, at No. 14 General Hospital Wimereux, France.
