Private George William Gregory

Army Number: 240735 (formerly 2797)
Battalion: 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
Born and lived at Winster, near Matlock, Derbyshire. Son of George and Gertrude Gregory, of West Bank, Winster. He was a Labourer prior to enlisting on 14th October 1914 at Ashbourne, Derbyshire and was transferred to the 2/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on the 16th August 1915 and went to France on 19th August 1915.
He was admitted to the 19th Casualty Clearing Station at Beauval, France, suffering from a sceptic left knee, on the 12th of July 1916. He was transferred to the 16th General Hospital at Le Treport, France on the 20th July 1916, and was sent to England on 27th July 1916. He returned to France on 4th January 1917 and then suffered gunshot wounds to his face and left hand on 22nd April 1917. Was admitted to the 13th Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, France on the 24th of April 1917 and sent to England again on the 25th of April 1917.
He was posted to the 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 27th July 1917. He returned to France on 29th July 1917 and was posted to the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 17th August 1917.
He was wounded for a third time on the 236th September 1917, suffering from shrapnel wounds to his thighs and arms and died, on 29th September 1917, aged 27, at the 2nd Australian General Hospital at Wimereux, France.
