Born at Worksop, Nottinghamshire and lived at 38 Mercroft Street, Worksop. Son of William and Kate Gray, of 31, Clinton Street, Worksop. He was a coal miner at Manton Colliery prior to enlisting 7th September 1914 at Worksop. He went to France 2nd March 1915 and suffered shrapnel wounds to his back and lungs, 25th September 1915. He died of these wounds, 27th September 1915, age 24, at No. 10 Casualty Clearing Station, Remy Siding, Belgium.
