Born at Walkington, Beverley, Yorkshire. Lived at Harworth, Nottinghamshire. Son of Matthew and Mary Jane Gilbank, of Belby, Howden, Yorkshire. He was a Farm Wagoner prior to enlisting at Retford, Nottinghamshire. Went to France 24th March 1915 and was killed by shellfire, 6th August 1916, aged 22, whilst serving in the line at Longueval, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
