Born at St. Annes, Nottingham. Son of John and Maria Gavagan, of 6, Palethorp Avenue, Dale Street, Nottingham. He was a General Labourer prior to enlisting 21st April 1908 at Nottingham.
He served in India from the 7th October 1909 to 2nd October 1914. Went to France 4th November 1914 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left arm 12th March 1915. He was admitted to No. 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France and was evacuated to England 26th March 1915.
He returned to France 3rd August 1915 and was killed in action, 16th September 1916, during the attack near Guillemont, France during the Battle of the Somme.
