He was a cowman prior to enlisting 10th December 1915 at Retford, Nottinghamshire. He was posted to the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France 27th July 1917. He was posted to the 2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 17th August 1917 and was killed in action, 26th September 1917, during the attack at Wieltje, Belgium.
