Born at Eckington, Derbyshire and lived at 92, Speedwell Terrace, Staveley, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Son of William and Elizabeth Ann Dutton, of 13, Bird Street, Staveley Town, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner (pony driver) prior to enlisting at Staveley. He went to France on 17th December 1914 with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. Then was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was killed in action, on 3rd September 1916, aged 19, during the attack on the German positions near Beaumont Hamel, France.
