Born at Winster, Derbyshire. Son of John and Elizabeth Dale of Gratton Moor, Elton, Winster, Matlock, Derbyshire. He was a brickmaker prior to enlisting on 9th November 1914 at Matlock. He went to France on 11th June 1916 and was awarded the Good Conduct Badge on 14th November 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder and left knee on 23rd April 1917 and was treated at 58 Casualty Clearing Station, Lillers, France. He died of wounds, on 20th May 1917, aged 24, at No. 13 General Hospital Boulogne, France.
