Born and lived in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire. Son of Arthur and Mary Ann Dalby, of Easthorpe Street, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire. He was a bootmaker prior to enlisting at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Killed in action, 3rd September 1916, aged 24, in the attack north-west of Thiepval, France, during the Battle of the Somme.

Buried: Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France. Plot 2, Row A, Grave 4.
