Born at Danesmoor, Derbyshire. Son of Elijah and Elizabeth Cresswell, of Elliott’s Cottages, Shuttlewood, Derbyshire. Husband of Ellen Cresswell, of 414 Hedge Row, Stonebroom, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 15th March 1915 at Derby. He went to France on 12th October 1915. He was killed in action, 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
