Born at Nottingham. Son of Arthur and Abeth Julia Cridlan (Formerly Cox), of Maisemore Park, Gloucester. Joined the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment from the North Staffordshire Regiment on 16th July 1916 having landed in France on 12th July 1916. He was awarded the M.C. London Gazette date 26th September 1917 ” For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when commanding a raid near Plouvain, France, 5th August 1917. Reaching the enemy’s wire, it was found to be uncut and the bangalore torpedo was fired, which caused the raiding party to be scattered. He then rallied all his men and made three attempts to get through the second row of wire, which was uncut by the torpedo. This was done under very heavy machine gun and rifle fire at very close range. He set a splendid example to all ranks.” He was killed in action, 29th October 1917, age 21, by German shellfire whilst serving with the battalion near Hazebrouck, Belgium.
