Born at Belper, Derbyshire. Son of Mary and Jesse John Cowley, of 23 Grayling Street, Derby. He was a coachbuilder in the carriage and wagon department at Midland Railway, Derby, prior to enlisting on 5th November 1915 at Nottingham. He went to France on 11th July 1916 and suffered gunshot wounds to his scalp and back on 9th October 1916. He was admitted to No. 20 Casualty Clearing Station, Warlincourt, France and died of wounds on 12th October 1916.
