Private Herbert Cook

Battalion: 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Bourne, Lincolnshire. Son of James and Elizabeth Cook, of West Pinchbeck, near Spalding, Lincolnshire. He was a labourer prior to enlisting into the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 16th November 1903 at Chesterfield. He served in India from 15th February 1907 to 26th January 1911. He went to France on 19th September 1914 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left thigh on 9th August 1915. He was treated at 10 Casualty Clearing Station, Abeele, Belgium, on 10th August 1915 and was admitted to the British Red Cross Hospital Boulogne, France on 11th August 1915. He was transferred to England, on Hospital Ship Cambria, on 1st September 1915. He returned to France on 1st February 1916 and was wounded on 5th July 1916. He was admitted to hospital at Cammieres and was posted to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 3rd September 1916. he was killed in action, on 8th October 1916, in the German attack on the British line near Thiepval, France during the Battle of the Somme.
