Born at Nottingham and lived at 4, New Street, Carrington, Nottingham. Son of Arthur and Harriet Colton, of Carrington, Nottingham; Husband of Mrs. Ethel M. Allerton (formerly Colton), of 71, Constance Street, New Basford, Nottingham. He was a brass bobbin winder in a lace factory prior to enlisting at Nottingham. Served in Gallipoli during 1915, and was killed in action, 26th September 1916, aged 26, in the attack on the German positions near Thiepval, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
