Lance Corporal Henry Clayson

Battalion: 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Son of Henry Fisher Clayson and Annie Clayson, of New Road, Belper, Derbyshire. He was an errand bot for a furniture dealer prior to enlisting on 4th September 1914 at Derby. He went to France on 27th February 1915 and suffered gunshot wounds to his right foot and buttock, on 28th April 1915. He was treated at 8 Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleuil, France and 14 General Hospital Wimereux, France, before being transferred to England on 3rd May 1915. He returned to France on 3rd March 1916. Was appointed Lance Corporal on 26th May 1916 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
