Born and lived at South Normanton, Derbyshire. Son of William and Sarah Jane Clay, of B Winnings, South Normanton; Husband of Emma Clay, of 7, South Street, South Normanton, Alfreton, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 12th January 1915 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He served in Gallipoli during 1915 and was later transferred to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Died: 5th September 1918, age 36.
