He was born at Leverhulme, Lancashire. Son of James and Alice Clarkson, of “Wyndene,” Caledon Road, Nottingham. He was educated at Nottingham High School and University College, Nottingham. He was commissioned on the 24th April 1918 and joined the 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment at Verquin, France, on 24th July 1918. He was killed in action, 9th August 1918, aged 19, whilst out on patrol at Gorre in the Essarts sector, France.
