Born at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Son of George and Sarah Ann Clarke, of Barlboro near Chesterfield, Derbyshire; Husband of Nellie Clarke, of West End, Barlboro. He was a Coal Miner prior to enlisting 20th August 1914 at Staveley, Derbyshire. He went to France 11th November 1914 and suffered gunshot wounds to his back, 2nd July 1915. He died of wounds, 3rd July 1915, aged 29, at No 16 Field Ambulance, Belgium.
