Born at Enderby, Leicestershire. Son of Joseph William and Emma Clarke, of 34 Dunster Street, Leicester. Husband of Edith Clarke. He was a railway stableman prior to enlisting at Leicester. He was killed in action, 2nd October 1918, in the attack on the German positions near Ramicourt and Monbrhain, France.

His brother Private Joseph William Clarke, 58th Battery Machine Gun Corps, also fell in the Great War.
