Born at Asfordby, Leicestershire. Son of George and Eliza Clarke, of 37, Byron Street, Bulwell, Nottinghamshire. Husband of Florence Hardy of 37 Malt Mill Lane, Nottingham. He was a General Labourer prior to enlisting on 24th June 1908 at Nottingham. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 9th October 1914 and went to France on 11th November 1914. He was promoted to Corporal, on 23rd May 1915. He suffered gunshot wounds to both thighs, on 11th July 1915 and was admitted to No. 1 Canadian General Hospital, on 12th July 1915. He was transferred to England on 16th July 1915. He returned to France on 28th March 1916 and was appointed Lance Sergeant, on 3rd December 1916. He was promoted to Sergeant on 6th January 1917 and was killed in action, on 7th July 1917, aged 30, by German shellfire near the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium.
