Son of William and Pattie Checkley, of Lime Grove Avenue, Matlock, Derbyshire. He was a coal merchants clerk prior to enlisting on 25th August 1915 at Derby. He went to Gallipoli on 1st July 1915 and was killed in action, 9th August 1915, aged 18, in the attack at Ismail Oglu Tepe, (Chocolate Hill), Gallipoli, Turkey.
