Born at Broxholme, Lincolnshire. Son of William Henry and Elizabeth Shipman Twidale. Husband of Florrie Twidale, of 17, Wright Street, Derby. He was a clerk prior to enlisting 3rd March 1898 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He served with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment in Malta from 21st September 1898 to the 13th December 1901, South Africa 14th December 1901 to 17th September 1902, China, 18th September 1902 to the 6th December 1904, Strait Settlements, 7th December 1904 to the 11th December 1906 and India 12th December 1906 to the 19th March 1910. Discharged on termination of his first period of service 19th March 1910.
He re-enlisted 3rd January 1914 with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, appointed Lance Corporal 15th August 1914 and promoted Corporal 7th September 1914. He went to France 11th November 1914 and was appointed Lance Sergeant 29th December 1914, promoted Sergeant 11th January 1915. He suffered gunshot wounds to his leg 20th March 1915 and was admitted to the 4th General Hospital, Versailles, France 23rd March 1915. He invalided to England 5th April 1915. He was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to Gallipoli, 23rd August 1915, and served in Egypt prior to going to France 19th July 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his back and chest 27th September 1916 and was treated 22 General Hospital, Camiers, France, before being transferred to England on Hospital Ship Cambria, 6th October 1916. He was treated at Northamptonshire War Hospital, Duston from the 7th October 1916 to the 17th November 1916. He returned to France 26th January 1917 and was posted 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 6th July 1917. Posted to the 2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 18th August 1917 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left leg and right thigh 2nd December 1917. He was admitted to 26 General Hospital, Etaples, France 4th December 1917 and died of wounds 8th December 1917, aged 39.
