Born at Wood Green, London. Son of Henry Ailes and Margaret Chappell, of “Oxwycke”, Graham Road, Mitcham, Surrey. He worked in the civil service. prior to enlisting and went to France, 22nd September 1915. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 22nd April 1916. He joined the 16th Battalion in France 30th April 1916 and was killed in action, 3rd September 1916, in the attack on the German positions near Beaumont Hamel, during the Battle of the Somme.
