Battalion : 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
Born in Firvale, Yorkshire. Son of Richard and Ann Jones of Firvale Street, Harthill, Yorkshire. He was a coal miner at Shirebrook Colliery, Derbyshire, prior to enlisting at Shirebrook. He went to France on 28th August 1915 (according to medal index card) with an unknown Battalion/Regiment (9th Battalion were in Gallipoli at the time) and was later transferred to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action, 26th September 1916, in the attack near Ovillers, France during the Battle of the Somme.
