Lived at Bulwell, Nottingham. Son of Frederick and Susannah James, of 75, Repton Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 4th October 1915 at Nottingham. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 8th February 1916 and went to France on 9th February 1916. He was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 28th February 1916 and was killed in action, on 4th July 1916, aged 19, during the attack on the German positions near Fricourt, France.
