Born and lived at Carlton, Nottingham. Son of Elijah and Fanny Etches, of 278, High Street, Old Basford, Nottingham. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting 18th May 1915 at Nottingham. He was posted to the 14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 7th May 1915. He was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France 16th December 1915. He died of wounds, 24th February 1916, age 18, received accidentally, during bomb throwing practice.
